A jellyfish drifting in the cold waters of the Atlantic Ocean. Commonly found in the coastal waters of temperate regions, where they can thrive in the nutrient-rich waters. In Cape Town, the Benguela Current, driven by deep upwellings from the South Atlantic, brings nutrients up from the ocean floor. This unique ecosystem provides an ideal backdrop for witnessing the compass jellyfish. Unlike many marine species, compass jellyfish simply drift in the water column, unable to swim against currents. This inherent vulnerability to the forces of nature means that during storms or other temporary shifts in current flow, large numbers of these jellyfish can be deposited along the shorelines.
