A bait ball forms off the wild coast of South Africa during the annual feeding frenzy known as the sardine run. Dolphins play a crucial role in forming the bait ball by working together to push a column of sardines from the depths to the surface, where birds, whales, sharks, and other predators can feed. The sardine run involves millions of individual sardines traveling with a cold water current from the Agulhas Bank up to Mozambique. This massive migration attracts a diverse array of species, including whales, pods of dolphins, various bird species, sharks, orcas, and other marine animals.
